Q9s on Q♠ 7♦ 2♥, checked to you — bet small, bet big or check?

The answer

Check

Check

Solvers also mix: Bet small

The math: Q72 rainbow · weak-kicker top pair → solver checks 53%, small-bets 32%: pot control is the main line, a small stab the backup.

Why

Top pair with a nine kicker is a marginal hand. Some worse queens and sevens will pay a small bet — that's why the solver stabs about a third of the time — but checking is the more frequent choice: your kicker means every raise spells trouble, no draw punishes the free card on this bone-dry board, and checking keeps the pot small while protecting the rest of your checking range. Take the cheap showdown as your main line, and don't hate a small bet now and then.

Every option

  • Bet small≈⅓ pot ($7)

Why not: Close — this is the solver's second choice, about a third of the time: worse queens and sevens do pay a small bet. But with a nine kicker every raise has you crushed, and the thin value you collect doesn't cover the pots you bloat while behind. Checking edges it out as the main line.

  • Bet bigpot-size ($20)

Why not: The solver almost never bombs here. A pot-size bet mostly gets action from the queens that out-kick you, while the weak pairs and floats you beat give up — you'd be building a big pot exactly when you're behind, with a hand too good to bluff and too weak for thick value.

  • CheckCheckCorrect

The idea behind it

When top pair's kicker is weak, thin value flips close to even — a few worse hands pay, but every raise means trouble. The default is pot control: check, keep the pot small, and let the marginal hand get cheaply to showdown.
