EV
Expected value: the average chips a decision wins or loses over the long run. Poker is chasing +EV.
You're heads-up on the river with a pair that beats a bluff and nothing else. The pot is 100 chips; your opponent shoves 100 more. You're getting 2-to-1: risk 100 to win 200, so you need to be right 33 percent of the time. Put this player on bluffing 40 percent of the time and the call is worth 0.4 times 200 minus 0.6 times 100 — plus 20 chips. Fold and that 20 vanishes. That's the EV of the call: not what happens tonight, but what the spot pays if you play it a thousand times.
Any one hand is mostly noise, which is why EV is the only honest scoreboard. Stack off with aces preflop, lose to a two-outer on the river, and the call was still right — the math didn't move because a five fell. Good players pick the lines that print over the long run, not the ones that felt good afterward. Solvers and GTO charts do the same job: they estimate EV before the cards decide the hand.
The beginner error is grading a play by its result. Calling that shove and losing doesn't make the call wrong; folding a flip you'd have won doesn't make the fold right. Beginners also count only the chips on the table and forget implied odds — the bets they collect later when the draw comes in — so suited connectors look like trash on the flop when they quietly print over time.
